High School Track Divisional Finals
May 18th, 2008
Highland High School's Jessica Davis not only served notice to the CIF Southern Section but the nation. Davis posted the 7th fastest 100 meters in the U.S this Year (11.69). She would later come back to capture the Women's 200 meters with a blazing 23.40 wind aided performance.
Jeremy Acosta of Highland turned in gutsy performance in the mens 3200 run. Acosta out kicked the opposition in the final 400 meters to capture the win with the fastest time of the day - 9:13.68.
Keeping everything Highland, Tianna Webberly captured the women's Pole Vault with an 11-06 vault. Ryan Butts of AV captured the title in the mens Division 2 long jump with a meet leading 24-04.75 jump. Saibra Noel (Paraclete) won the women's D-4 shot put (38-04.00). No Shortage of Surprises at State Meet
May 30th, 2008
Shocked and amazed are the only two words that can describe the events of friday night CIF State track and field championships preliminaries.
SHOCKED! AV's Ryan Butts, the national leader in the long jump, failed to qualify. Butts could only muster up one scratch and two consecutive 22-02.25, placing 12th overall and three spots out of the cut.
AMAZED. After placing 2nd in the 100 meters (11.88-qualifying 6th overall) Highlands Jessica Davis blazed the 200 meters in a blistering 23.22 with the wind slightly over the legal limit, by far the fastest time in the state!
AMAZED II: Christen Rivers (Palmdale) is like a cat with nine lives. Qualifying for the state meet as an alternate, Rivers once again made the best of it, nabbing the final spot for the women's 400 meter final.
Along with Butts, pole vaulter Tianna Webberly (Highland) and triple jumper Michael Vaughan (Desert) failed to qualify in their events
